To begin open-heart surgery, perfusionists were met with the time-consuming task of plumbing a complicated circuit of filters, pumps and sensors. Medtronic wanted to simplify the process and make it less susceptible to mistakes. WhiteBoard began by researching the procedure with perfusionists, which was key to understanding how to create a system that would better fit their needs. The design team then set out to organize the components of the device in an intuitive way that also emphasized easy accessibility. The new system’s methodical structure provides the user time-savings and assurance of quality blood management. In the next phase of the project WhiteBoard utilized their in-house 3D rendering and prototyping capabilities, in just weeks WhiteBoard also created a compact rolling cart that housed the entire system, making it more versatile and mobile.
